preseason rankings

I thing that's really gotten to me the last few years is the preseason rankings that the ap puts out and the ncaa uses to rank their teams. I CAN'T stand it. basically they are ranking them, by the names on the front of their uniforms. Auburn needs overtime to beat JACKSONVILLE ST and struggled last week to beat a Louisville team (which lost to Houston this week!!!) I would really like the rankings to come out week 4 or 5. once teams are done playing their bullshit games against far superior opponents. Every year that SEC has 10 teams in the top 25 because of their reputation and than because "they are so good" everyone just beats up on eachother. Maybe it's because they are highly overrated and top heavy!!!! Pac 12 1-12 is far more balanced than the sec. Even look at Ohio St, they could finish number 1 this year, yes they are a good team, but they might finish the year playing no other team in the top 25....does that sound like a team that deserves to be #1. Nope, its so infuriating.

  1. Isn't this part of the reason the BCS rankings don't come out until a little bit later? They still have their own issues, but that seems like one thing they do get right. Of course, that just gives the other polls (including those guessing at BCS ranks) a few weeks with the spotlight to themselves. The Ohio State example is one reason the playoff is an improvement, right? They might go undefeated, but they won't get into the championship game without facing another damn good team--though possibly one that's been hurt more by attrition if it has played a significantly tougher schedule to that date. I guess those are all incremental improvements, but they are improvements. Not that they fix your basic point--that the preseason rankings are ridiculous, don't account for short season samples and the volatility of a sport that has really rapid turnover and rests on young players who can for no apparent reason vary wildly in performance, etc.

  2. i think ultimately the rankings shouldn't come out until after 3 or 4 weeks. Theres not much of a gauge to judge teams on when they are playing the likes of jacksonville st, georgia st etc. Auburn was ranked 6th, they struggled week 1, stayed pat, week 2 struggled and finally beating jacksonville st in week 2 and the voters were like woah, we ranked them way to high, lets arbitrarely drop them to 18, and THAT was too high as they are getting rocked by a team that's supposedly 5 spots better. if the rankings came out after 3 weeks, teams like auburn, tcu, oregon, etc would be adjusted and teams like utah among others will be ranked higher. oh well
